Turning Over A New LEAF

In August, we welcomed a new Farm & Food Program Manager to WREN. Ruth Ann Hacking comes to us with a background in organic farming and local food systems, and a deep commitment to supporting farmers and expanding the market for local food. She has hands on experience at every stage of local food production and sale, including vegetable production, pastured meat, working with wholesale buyers, and selling to the public via CSAs, farmers markets, and online. She looks forward to helping farmers navigate the business of farming so that they have more time and energy to focus on production.

This year, in addition to helping you sell your products at our farmers markets and Local Works stores, we are excited to announce the launch of a new business development program: LEAF (Launching Entrepreneurs in Agriculture and Food). Modeled on our popular LEAP program for artists, the LEAF program now offers comprehensive, long-term support for your farm or food business through a combination of workshops, one-on-one assistance, peer networking, and resources for farmers and food producers. To join the LEAF program, please email us for our welcome packet and application. Let us help you grow!

Workshops – LEAF workshops focus on reaching new markets with your products and building the skills you need to run a successful business. We are still planning workshops for 2018, so please let us know if there are any topics you would like us to cover this year.

Private Coaching – HOP Sessions are one-on-one business assistance, designed to help you with common business challenges. Spend an hour with WREN staff to work through a specific question or concern that you have about your business. Coaching is available Tuesday through Friday, by appointment. Click HERE for more information.

Networking – WREN has teamed up with the Littleton Co-op to offer a monthly networking event, Coffee For Farmers. Meet at the Co-op Cafe on second Wednesdays, 11am-noon, through the winter, for free coffee and conversation with other farmers.

Field Guide – Whether you’re wondering how to approach a wholesale buyer, having trouble navigating regulations, or would like to sell a value-added product, we are developing a Farm & Food Opportunity Field Guide with step-by-step instructions to help you increase your sales and reach new markets.

In addition to formal LEAF workshops and private coaching, Ruth Ann is available any time to answer questions and refer you to resources related to running a farm or food business, including marketing, product development, websites, social media, legal and financial issues, or to put you in touch with one of the many WREN members who provide professional services to business owners.

Scholarships & Grants

New Hampshire farmers and food producers with low to moderate family income may qualify for a Microenterprise Scholarship, which provides a free WREN Business Membership, workshops, and private coaching for up to three years. We also have small equipment grants available to help healthy food vendors prepare for the Gorham Farmers Market. These grants may be used for tables, tents, signs, packaging, labeling, or other supplies needed to prepare for market. If you would like to be considered for a scholarship or grant, please email us or stop in to complete an application.
