HARVARD PILGRIM HEALTH CARE FOUNDATION AWARDS WREN Berlin Local Works Farmers’ Market GRANT for LOCAL COMMUNITY GARDEN PROGRAMS

WREN Berlin Local Works Farmers’ Market GRANT for LOCAL COMMUNITY GARDEN PROGRAMS

WREN, a local non-profit uses a space owned by the City of Berlin for storing tents and tables for the large Berlin Local Works Farmers Market on Pleasant St. in Berlin. The community garden plan will include a hands-on teaching and learning garden. WREN will create nine raised moveable garden beds. Five of the beds will be planted in a manner to highlight to the communities the ability to plant in a small plot of land such as their own yard. These will be used for demonstration, education and teaching, educational purposes to share with the community during the weekly Farmers’ Market in partnership with the very active Coos County Garden Club, and any interested volunteers can lend a hand to a very visible and public community teaching garden. Other garden beds will be given to WREN members with a priority to those who live nearby. Contact Laura at 752-0060, first come first serve.

The garden beds will be planted with the intention of using the most visible section of the lot to a working edible garden as a tool to promote local foods and understanding the local Northern NH growing season. The Coos Botanical Society will host a weekly booth called ‘Ask a Gardener’ at the entrance of the fenced in lot, and give tours and talks regarding topics of interest to the public attending the large Berlin Local Works Farmers Market every Thursday 3-7pm. Topics will include growing herbs, homeowner yard composting, worm composting, growing potatoes, preserving your harvest and more.

The harvest from the teaching gardens will be available to the public and shared at the WREN information table with the Wholesome Wave double incentive EBT/SNAP matching program called Granite State Bucks.

WREN will celebrate the harvest on September 10th for the annual “Stone Soup” event, where the children’s book is highlighted and the ideas of coming together as a community with local food and making a variety of “Stone Soups” are available free to the whole community.

The Berlin Local Works Farmers’ Market runs for thirteen Thursday’s in the summer, starting June 25th from 3-7pm on Pleasant St, Berlin with vendors selling local food, creative artisans, while hosting live music, and giving demonstrations. For more information check out www.wrenworks.org or WREN Works Maker Studio on Facebook.
